The Plan

Well, it’s been a week since I hit my low (or wait, I guess technically, it was a high, right?)  In any case, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on myself, my weight and my habits.  I’ve come to three conclusions regarding my weight:

  1. I drink too much
  2. I eat too much
  3. I sit around way too much

I know I can’t change everything at once so this week I’ve started an experiment.  I haven’t watched my eating or drinking very much, but I have made some activity goals for myself.  I’ve gone from about four thousand steps per day to a goal of 10 thousand a day and I was able to reach that goal every day so far.  It feels good!

I also started listening to a fantastic podcast called “Half Size Me”.  I find motivation in these and they make me look forward to my daily 2-3 walks at work.

Next week’s goal will be to continue my 10k steps goal and also to incorporate 5 a day on fruits and veggies for at least 5 days out of 7.  I plan on doing this by doing smoothies for breakfast  using my new favorite recipe:  1 cup milk, 1 cup strawberries, 1 ripe banana, 1 tsp. vanilla.  I’ll also commit to snacks of fresh broccoli, carrots and pea pods with humus at work.  I can do that.

What’s my motive this week?  The activity I had last week made me feel strong.  I want to feel strong and powerful and this activity and healthy eating are two ways to ensure I keep feeling that way.

I’m happier and more grounded than I have been since my divorce four years ago and quite possibly more content than I have been at any single point in my adult life.  My children are healthy, usually happy, and thriving.  I have a terrific home in the country.  I am debt free other than my car loan (thank you Dave Ramsey).  My graduate program will be complete with just five classes to go.  I have landed the career I wanted at an income I am comfortable in.  And I’ve been spending a lot of time with a certain man who seems to be the ying to my yang.

And I’ve just reached a new high weigh-in at 242.62 pounds.  How did I let this happen?

In 1999, shortly before my marriage, I was at 170 pounds.  In 2012, just before my divorce I was at 242 pounds.  Post divorce, I dropped to a low of 202 and the weight has slowly crept up in the last four years.  The time has come to analyze, reflect and plan.  Most of all, I need to resort to my mother’s guidance and find my motive.  More to come.

Back to school!

After 10 years of marriage and motherhood, I’ve decided to hit the books and get back to school. I also work full time, but my workload has decreased this Fall, which has given me the opportunity to use some vacation time to attend a class in the afternoons. It sure is a strange feeling to be back in the classroom; I find myself one of 80 students enrolled in this class, and I have yet to see one other person wearing heels and pantyhose. Yeesh. I really need to think about changing into flip flops and yoga pants before I get to class!
This is truly going to be a balancing act, but it feels good to challenge my mind. I feel proud that I am facing my fears and leading by example when I tell my oldest son, “college is important.” And now that I’ve aced my first big test, I really believe in myself. Now…can I keep it up? I need some motivation, here.
